The following information is an excerpt from the State of NH “How to hire an interpreter” handbook and should serve as a guide to both interpreters and hiring agencies. In NH, interpreters are in private practice (freelance); the following guidelines have been developed and have become standard for the field:
- licensed by the state – download a licensure application
- If a Deaf person prefers a particular interpreter for an assignment they can fill out and send in a waiver form (form must be filled out by the Deaf person and filled out each time that interpreter is used). The most recent waver form can be found here. Waivers must be sent to the state for approval 7 days before date of the assignment.
